OVERVIEW

Creating a community

A little over a year ago, I joined ColorStack — a nonprofit organization aiming to increase the number of Black and Latinx Computer Science graduates that go on to start rewarding technical careers. Those initial few months really solidified my belief and passion in their mission, so I co-created an Alabama A&M University chapter of ColorStack: a student-led org to deliver community building, academic support and career development opportunities for students in tech.

MY ROLE

As Co-President of ColorStack AAMU, I managed logistics, operations, branding and design. With an incredible team — special shoutout to Adeyori Adekunle, Olayiwola Ajibode, Chimdindu Okenyi, Mitchel Onyebuchi, Sijan Mainali, and Enoch Akade — I coordinated strategic partnerships with established clubs on campus.

To manage logistics, I built and co-led a team of 7+ executive board members, overseeing outreach, operations, communications, and events. I also spearheaded our branding and outreach, leading social campaigns that garnered 10K+ social media impressions!

BUILDING + LEADING

After initially defining our purpose, mission and vision, we started out initially as a team of 4: 2 Co-Presidents, A Vice President of Programming and a Vice President of Communications. However after the first semester, we realized we actually needed some help. Since Adeyori (Co-Founder) and I had similar roles, and I was also handling all design, and branding efforts while still holding an overseeing position, it was best we expanded while still maintaining structure.

We quickly found Mitchel, Chimdi, Enoch and Sijan, while Olayiwola maintained his role as secretary! I genuinely cannot imagine a better executive board, and with the seven of us, we formed a wonderful team with various disciplines (communications, outreach, operations, corporate leadership ...) to get our work done.

DESIGN

establish the best design & social media presence at AAMU

We wanted to make sure we had the BEST media presence out there — so this meant creating a ton of assets, producing a ton of content, having a consistent identity, and being active on social media. Most of our target audience were on Instagram and LinkedIn so we ensured to post regularly there.

POSTERS

I singlehandedly made most of all the visual assets for the chapter: posters, presentation slides, nametags, sponsorship packets, IG post + stories, and more. It has been a whirlwind of late nights, sheer focus and rapid iteration, but with the support and feedback from my team, it was truly magical to see my designs come to life time and again.

Representing

the ColorStack Stacked Up summit

I received a full scholarship to attend the 2025 ColorStack Stacked Up Summit in San Francisco, selected as one of 450 students from over 15,000 members nationwide. I leveraged the opportunity to network with industry professionals, learn from sessions, and connect with peers and partner companies while representing our chapter. I also met with ColorStack co-founder Jehron Petty and other members of the ColorStack team.

REFLECTION

looking Ahead

Building ColorStack AAMU has meant creating a thriving community, the first of its kind on our campus: shaping our culture, setting direction, and holding ourselves accountable, not only as a team, but as partners towards a common goal. Along the way, I’ve had to confront my own areas for growth and learn in real time what it takes to lead with clarity, consistency, and care.

Thus far, it has been an absolute privilege to be deeply invested in something that fuels my passion, and an even bigger one to bring this passion to life, alongside like-minded builders. There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work that people never see, but seeing our chapter come to life and watching members find community, confidence, and opportunity has been genuinely fulfilling to me. Ultimately, this experience continually reinforces what I want to do long-term: to build spaces that open doors, to lead with purpose, and to empower others to unlock their greatest potential.
